The MFV Nayiri
A very solid and capable boat
for coastal cruising, this Inchcape 32 is a "big" 32 feet and as such
provides a great platform for entertaining family and friends.
The pleasure that can be derived
from motor-sailing up the coast, from the comfort of the warm, dry
wheelhouse should not be under-estimated; yet such is the pedigree and
character of the Inchcape that she still commands respect amongst those
more inclined towards sail alone. In fact, while purely sailing craft
can obviously put to sea in stronger winds, you will often find yourself
using "Nayiri" when others stay in the marina simply because the rain or
drizzle needn't bother you!
Her current owner is a young man
with a very good eye for what needs attending to, and he has maintained
her accordingly. Having enjoyed family holidays aboard for the past few
summers, his children are now growing and he wants to move on - despite
having invested in significant improvements including new motor in 2008
and ITB in 2010.
While it may be rude to refer to
such a vessel as a "floating holiday home", in fact the dual-purpose
ability of these craft is worth considering. Her home port of Barcelona
being a good example, it is nowadays difficult and expensive to have a
holiday base in the more sought-after coastal areas. A boat such as "Tafna"
can function as a small "second home" in your chosen location for a very
reasonable cost, with the ability to build your cruising experience an
added bonus!
Along with their fishing boat
lines the Eyemouth Inchapes were also built to fishing boat scantlings,
with heavy sawn oak framing and thick larch planking. The high-prow,
round stern shape had evolved through many generations of hard North Sea
fishing and it's seaworthiness cannot be called into question.
Prospective owners often
specified finer timbers such as teak and mahogany, especially for
interior fitting out. The boatbuilders at Eyemouth did these materials
proud, and the standard of craftsmanship was such that even today the
reputation of the yard stands alongside the great yacht builders of the
era.
Included is the original
brochure and drawings from the naval architect, Mr James Evans and can
be mailed if necesary.
Can she sail?
In a word: yes. If you know what
to expect. In the early days engines were unreliable and fishing boats
this shape often had to depend on their ability to sail - albeit with a
gaff rig - to ply their trade.
The yachts were conceived as a
"60/40" motor-sailer, with the engine the primary means of propulsion
and the sails more as a back-up and to reduce fuel consumption. With the
wind on the beam the sails steady up the motion and help her along quite
nicely; as it comes on to the quarter or even astern it's not
unreasonable to shut the engine off altogether - although don't expect
hull speed in a force 2!
On a well-sorted boat like
“Nayiri” the sails are quick and easy to put up and handle, and it seems
a waste not to do so whenever the wind is fair.
"Nayiri" details and condition*
"Nayiri" could best be described
as an "honest" boat, in comparable or better condition to her
contemporaries, with nothing to hide. Planking above and below the
waterline appears fine with no obvious deterioration, and framing (as
would be expected) looks as solid as the day it was installed!
Machinery is in good condition
and the BMC 60 hp diesel starts willingly and is smoke-free. Underway at
near-tickover, the engine is surprisingly smooth and quiet at all
cruising speeds considering it is directly beneath the wheelhouse floor.
Engine room is clean and accessible. Batteries are fairly new and all
electrics work well. Plumbing and fittings are largely original, thus
solid and retaining period charm (the owner went to some lengths to get
a new bowl for the Baby Blake rather than fit a 'modern' head!).
Update 02 August 2010:
As previously stated, this is a
well-maintained yacht - the following has recently been carried out to
ensure she looks her best this season:
* Hull painted with
International Antifouling
*New anods
*New batteries
